View Article  Activities Update

Hello everyone its Robin here reporting on some activities we enjoyed in July and giving you a taster of things to come in August!

The weather has been so kind that most ladies and gents have been outside enjoying themselves. ‘Striking a Goal’ was great...we even had a visitor joining in. Mind you we all need some more practice with the hoopla....it needed one of the Carers to show us how to score!

The ‘Similes’ went down a treat… one lovely lady even gave me answers from under the hair dryer as she missed the group session and wanted to join in!

I am very lucky because as Principal of a Dance School I have many various CDs and Videos. A favourite was Billy Cotton... Waakeey Wakee!... how many of you remember him? Ballet was requested so Tales of Beatrix Potter with dancers from The Royal Ballet was shown. I hope to bring some of my pupils later on in the year to demonstrate some Barre Work .

August activities kick off with Agility... we will be exercising with pom-poms to music!

That’s all for now... watch this space!

We are nearly coming to the end of a few intense weeks of training for all the staff at Valerie Manor. This week all staff and volunteers attended their first aid training on site led by Michelle Stubbs (above left) of Stubbs Training. The staff now have a well deserved break from training until October.

I would like to thank you all for being so patient while the essential work has been carried out around Valerie Manor on the Fire Doors. I’m sure you will all miss seeing Malcolm and Mark from Catt Carpentry around the Manor as they were always so cheerful and helpful during their weeks here. We even have a couple of photos of them in action during their last day here.

View Article  Greek day, coming soon!...

Hello it’s Robin here. I’ve just returned from a weeks holiday in Greece... what a lovely place with lovely people! It gave me the idea of having a themed Greek day. I have the music and flags all ready and waiting. The olives and feta cheese will be served along with traditional Greek Lunch and Supper.

We’ll try and bring some Greek sunshine to Valerie Manor, but don’t worry… we won’t be smashing any plates !!

And they’re off!...

Care team member Joyce today distributed all our knitting enthusiasts here at the manor with needles, wool and instruction for knitting the Valerie Manor Quilt. Aiming to complete by Christmas 2008, we will be keeping you up to date regularly with how the residents are getting on with their squares, and providing some technical details for all you knitting experts out there. So keep an eye out for updates, and watch our quilt grow from nothing to a patchwork of colour!

It's often the simple things that bring us the most joy...

Tuesday morning's entertainment; “Wakey Wa-a-key”, music from old time favourite Billy Cotton and his Band, provoked a stimulating conversation and dancing in the lounge!

Old favourites such as “When You’re Smiling”, “Ain’t She Sweet” and “Tea for Two” got the residents singing along and up on their feet led by care team member Alayna.

Stories of old were shared by the participants of times gone by and their younger dancing days. Many said it brightened their day and were still talking about it days later… when they asked to do it all again!
View Article  Farewell Sally-Ann, Hello Robin!
You may have noticed a slight lapse in the updating of our blog (we’ve been busy filling in the gaps today!). Sadly for us our much loved activities manager Sally-Ann has now left to work with Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club full time. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Sally-Ann for all her hard work in developing the activities schedule at Valerie Manor and wish her all the best for the future...

On a positive note, I am delighted to say that we are very lucky to now have Robin of Lets Dance! (Hassocks) (pictured left) as our activities coordinator. Robin will be developing and managing the activities schedule following discussion and involvement with the residents. Welcome Robin!

One of the first activities that Robin managed was ‘flexibility’ – movement to music from your chair. Read our blog entry from July 2 below…
View Article  Independence Day

The 4th of July may not be widely celebrated here in the UK but today at the Manor saw our residents enjoying an Independence Day menu; including Maryland Chicken, Banana Fritters, Caesar salad, and waffles with maple syrup and ice cream!... all amidst the stars and stripes of America. An American treat enjoyed by all… Uncle Sam would have been proud!

View Article  Fire Doors
For those who have or will be visiting Valerie Manor over the coming week or two you will see that we have a lot of work being undertaken on doors within the building. I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time. The work is to ensure all bedroom and corridor doors are compliant with current fire regulations and ensure the safety of all residents, staff and visitors.
View Article  Flexibility

Activities coordinator Robin today led a flexibility class – movement to music from your chair! This was enjoyed in the lounge by several of the residents and their visitors. It was lovely to see the residents enjoying themselves whilst exercising and encouraging a range of movements for their hands and arms.
