View Article  The Valerie Manor Quilt (part 2)...

The Valerie Manor quilt is coming along splendidly under the guidance of our very own care team member and project manager Joyce! We now have five completed squares and the ladies have agreed that they will have a knee blanket ready for Christmas, aiming to complete one square a week each.

They were even trying to tell me about knitting today..... They are using a plain stitch so that it looks the same on the front and back – They make the squares by putting one corner to another to see when they can cast off, leaving some wool to ensure they can sew them all together..... And even the gentlemen have been taking part by assisting the ladies by rolling the wool in preparation for the next squares!

We’ll keep you up to date with progress…

View Article  CSCI Inspection
Following an unannounced inspection from CSCI (Commission for Social Care Inspection) at the end of July, our detailed inspection report is now available to view and download online. We’re very happy to have achieved a ‘Good’ (2 star) rating which is the maximum rating we can achieve in our first year.

We are determined to keep up the good work and will strive to achieve an ‘Excellent’ 3 star rating next year!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the dedicated, hard working staff that make Valerie Manor a safe, caring home for all its residents.

Please feel free to view or download the report from the CSCI website; http://www.csci.org.uk/registeredservicesdirectory/RSSearchDetail.asp?ID=0000071434&Type=CRH
View Article  Activities Update No. 3

Hello again!,

Our Mind Benders Activities this past week were; World Vacation Spots - where questions were asked about different countries and everyone had to guess the country we were referring to and; Closure Phrases - e.g. “Laughter is the best…” (medicine). The ladies and gentlemen seemed to enjoy these activities whilst having a laugh at the same time.

The Agility Activity was Target Bean Bag - some residents even surprised themselves at how far they could throw those colourful bags on the Twister mat! We did our warm-up to Offenbach as one of the ladies really enjoys classical music.

Coming up is music from the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, indoor/outdoor Boules and a video of The Ballet Class with Maria Fay which I know will keep another one of the ladies especially happy.

Brian the Music Man is due at the end of the month which is an afternoon everyone looks forward to.

A favourite pastime this last week or so (along with the rest of the country!) has been the enjoyment and cheering on of Team GB as the British Athletes excel at the Beijing Olympics. It’s been a tense and exciting games so far and Team Valerie Manor wish all the athletes well in the closing week of the games.

Enjoy the rest of August, if it ever stops raining!

Hello everyone,

I thought you would like an update on some activities that we have enjoyed over the past couple of weeks. Although I put the programme together I am unable to be there every day so the lovely carers at Valerie Manor facilitate the activities when I am not around.

The activities are for fun but also have hidden benefits. We enjoyed a great time with pom poms last week shaking along to Caribbean Music and then playing some instruments along with the steel band...such rhythm!... this obviously helps with flexibility of the wrists, elbows and shoulders as well as concentrating on keeping in time with the music. I like to have a mini warm up before we start these activities which is hopefully helping with mobility.

One Activity this week was ‘Sensory Identification’ we concentrated on smell and touch this time; sight and sound are yet to come. We had several different pots of ‘smells’ e.g. mint sauce, vanilla essence, mixed spices and many more. Each person took a turn at sniffing the pots and at the end gave their opinion on what they thought it was. Everyone got at least one right. We then took it in turns to feel objects that were placed in a bag and at the end one by one they had to say which object they felt. I call these type of activities ‘Mind Benders’ as it helps us to us think and remember.

That’s all for now folks! Robin
View Article  Volunteers – Part 1 (Lady Marmalade)
We are so lucky to have such wonderful volunteers who dedicate so much of their time regularly to Valerie Manor. Below, familiar face Marmalade tells us a little bit about herself, and in our next post we introduce two new volunteers…

Hello, my name is Maireadh Knight (Marmalade) and I am so lucky to spend time at Valerie Manor and am thoroughly enjoying my afternoon each week with the residents. I currently work as a Police Community Support Officer for Sussex Police and patrol Shoreham Beach. Before Sussex Police I worked as a Road Runner for Southern FM.

I have wanted to find somewhere to do voluntary work for some time now and am delighted it was Valerie Manor. I can honestly say I have a great laugh playing games and doing activities with the residents – they are a great bunch of people. When I am at Valerie Manor I get a warm fuzzy feeling because it’s such a genuinely warm, caring and stimulating environment for the residents.

Come and join us!

View Article  Volunteers – Part 2 (Holly & Lydia)
We would like to say a huge welcome to our two new volunteers, Holly and Lydia. I would like to thank them both for giving up their time each week to spend with the residents at Valerie Manor and look forward to working closely with them and building on all the good work that Marmalade has started…

Hi, my name is Lydia, I am 18 and currently at college doing my A levels. I hope to go to medical school after college and eventually qualify as a doctor. Valerie Manor has been a great opportunity to meet new people and build up a rapport with the residents living there. I am thoroughly enjoying my work as a volunteer!

Hello, My name’s Holly and I have lived in Steyning for nearly 16 years now, I am studying Art, Sociology and English Language A Level at Steyning Grammar Sixth Form, and am hoping to go onto University to do a Degree in Social Work. I am looking forward to volunteering at Valerie Manor within the activities and hopefully my Art A Level will come in handy!
