Children in Need 2009
by
Zoe
on Wed 28 Oct 2009 12:24 GMT
Last year the residents and staff at Valerie Manor raised over £200 for Children in Need by making a 50 metre long paper chain. This year we're at it again and from the 17th - 20th November 2009 Pudsey mania will descend on Valerie Manor. The home will be decorated with Pudsey banners and balloons, all staff and residents will be wearing Pudsey badges and the Valerie Manor Children in Need week will begin!
This year we're aiming to knit and cross stitch some Pudseys as well as making cakes and biscuits for the residents, staff and visitors - plus organising a scrabble marathon... so why not give us all some encouragement by making a small donation...

COMMUNITY STARS
by
Robin Bates
on Tue 27 Oct 2009 11:58 GMT
Zoe is surrounded by a great team and really appreciates the
support she has received since becoming the Owner/Manager of Valerie
Manor.
This has especially come to light since being nominated in
the local Herald by Emma for the Community Stars ‘True Inspiration’ Award.
Emma wrote:
"In her first year Zoe has brought out a lot of inspiration
to the staff and residents of Valerie Manor Rest Home in Upper Beeding and given
a new lease of life to all our Residents"
It’s great to see everyone pulling together to make Valerie
Manor one big happy family!
The winners will be announced at the free awards
ceremony, at the Assembly Hall, Worthing, on Sunday, 1st November.

An Update on the Decorating and Extension Plans
by
Zoe
on Fri 23 Oct 2009 18:18 BST
It has been a hectic week for everyone as the study
area has been decorated following the repair of the roof. This has meant that
the resident's have been enjoying extra time in the dining room sharing sing-alongs and games with the
staff while the work has been taking place. It's been lovely to see the
resident's enjoying themselves, and with little disruption to their day – Thank you
to all the staff and to John (dad, left), our regular handyman and decorator, for making this week go as smoothly as possible.
Extension Planning I am pleased to say that the extension planning is coming along nicely and following a meeting with the architects this week we
are aiming to go out to tender in January with a provisional build start date
of March / April 2010. This is an exciting time for everyone and the architects
have made some suggestions as to how the residents and staff can get involved.
They will shortly be providing us with templates of the garden area so that everyone can have their say in the landscaping of the gardens.

Congratulations to Julie!
by
Zoe
on Fri 16 Oct 2009 20:34 BST
Julie has just completed her NVQ Level 2 in Health
and Social Care which she started earlier in the year with Sussex Training. This qualification is particularly relevant for home care assistants and will help in ensuring her actions support the care, protection and well-being of individuals in the home. Julie has worked
extremely hard over the past few months and it is a great achievement for her.
Well done Julie, we are all very proud of you!
The rest of the staff are also doing well and hope to all be finished within their allocated time frame. Many thanks also to all at Sussex Training for
their continuous support.

September Activities Summary
by
Robin Bates
on Sat 10 Oct 2009 13:53 BST
Oh how I love this time of the year!
We have been very lucky to have had so many wonderful sunny
days. The leaves on the trees are starting to change into their beautiful
Autumn colours. Some ladies and gentlemen have been sitting outside enjoying the
late sunshine and the beautiful surroundings.
Activity wise we were very physical in September... exercising with Pom Poms, Line Dancing from our chairs and after having
fun with Rhyming Slang we learnt the Lambeth Walk actions.
We enjoyed two Theme Days. One was Mexican Independence Day
with decorated dining room, themed food and Mexican music. Our second was an
Aloha Day. We all wore Leis, our lovely Carers wore grass skirts. Before going
to lunch in a decorated dining room we sampled a traditional Hawaiian
Punch... Mo’as Power Punch... no, it wasn’t alcoholic ! and Pinesesse Logs... again
a traditional pre-lunch nibble. We exercised to Hawaiian music and enjoyed a
themed lunch and supper.
Our ‘Mind Benders’ included Opposites and Requests, a Pub
Quiz and a Memories Game where each lady and gentleman were asked various
questions about their life... where they were born, where they went to school to
name but a few.
Please look out for our Posters for the BBC Children in Need
Appeal. This is in November but will be on display during October.

A Harvest Gift...
by
Zoe
on Fri 09 Oct 2009 19:40 BST
A huge thank you on behalf of the residents at Valerie Manor
to Reverend John Challis and the local community. After just celebrating the
Harvest Festival Reverend Challis had some produce that he thought the residents
at Valerie Manor would enjoy. It was a very kind thought and the residents have
already been enjoying some of the produce today. They are looking forward to
homemade jam and marmalade for their breakfast as well!
Reverend
Challis has been visiting us now at the Manor since March 2009
and has become a familiar face. Today the residents asked after his daughter and
dog who have also visited in the past and brightened up their
day.
Thank
you again to Revered Challis and the local community for thinking of us.

The Valerie Manor Painting #1
by
Zoe
on Thu 08 Oct 2009 19:06 BST

Thank you to our lovely volunteer marmalade for suggesting and project managing
the first Valerie Manor canvas, created with and by the residents. Marmalade visited
every week over the period of a few months and each resident contributed to the final product, which is yet to be titled. Marmalade is going to spend some more time
with the residents to come up with a suitable name for their first piece... yes,
they have already started 'poppies' which will be their second masterpiece!
What budding artists we have at Valerie Manor!

National Care Awards
by
Zoe
on Fri 02 Oct 2009 20:41 BST
The National Care Awards is an annual event which
allows people to nominate individuals or a team for an award associated to
care. This year I have made three nominations at Valerie Manor.
Of course, the
wonderful care team who tend to all the needs of our residents and their
visitors are the strength behind Valerie Manor and makes it the home that it is
with its high standards and personalised care. For that reason I have nominated
the Care Team, supported by quotes from the residents.
My second nomination was for
the Care Activities Co-ordinator, Robin. The resident’s faces light up when
Robin arrives and she gives up so much of her time organising, co-ordinating
and spending time with the residents, she really makes a difference to their
lives.
My third nomination was a team decision and is a new category this year - Best Resident/Relative Contribution. We have nominated Heather for this
award, the daughter to one of our residents who spends so much time not only
with her mother but with each and every one of the residents when she visits.
She will take time to talk to the residents or just hold their hands and
provide another smile around the Manor. Not only does Heather spend time with
the residents but always has time for the staff and myself providing support to
everyone.
Fingers crossed for all the nominations – I will
keep you updated with progress.
