View Article  Valerie Manor Bird Table

A number of our residents have been asking me to get a bird table for the gardens at Valerie Manor ever since they enjoyed watching birds feed from bird feeders that they made with Activities Coordinator Robin back in February. So as soon as we had a sunny weekend recently we went out and bought a bird table and a bird bath which now have a proud place in the garden.

We thought it would take several weeks until we saw birds brave enough to come and feed from it but already we have seen a variety of small birds including a little Robin! When the weather is nice the residents will be involved in changing the food and water but for now they have been watching out of the windows and the photos of the birds will be displayed downstairs soon for all to see (the residents will need to tell me what the birds are as my knowledge is limited). We hope to see several more soon but look forward to seeing our 3 little friends on a regular basis!

View Article  Red Nose Day!

All the residents and staff at Valerie Manor enjoyed Red Nose Day on Friday 13th March whilst raising money for Comic Relief. The staff dressed up in Red Nose Day tee shirts and wore red nail varnish with red lipstick and head boppers, not forgetting their red noses of course! All the residents chose a red nose to wear and some wanted to join in with the fun and have their nails painted red for the day! The 'giggler' ball went down a treat during the day providing many laughs with the staff and residents. In total we managed to raise over £90.00 for Comic Relief.

I'd also like to thank everyone for making my birthday so special on the day... the cake was beautiful, and a wonderful thought, thank you!

View Article  Infection Control
Infection control is high on everyone’s agenda and all staff have had the appropriate training and measures are in place to reduce or eliminate the possibility of cross infection. We again have been extremely lucky to be chosen to take part in ‘Safer, Cleaner, Homes’ Campaign and Alayna (pictured right)  will be the ‘champion’ for Valerie Manor and will work with West Sussex Primary Care Trust to support the home to deliver the highest Infection Prevention and Control standards to the residents.

View Article  Dementia Training
Valerie Manor staff were lucky enough to be selected by Chichester University to take part in a pilot study looking at Creative Therapies within the home to assist all residents with enjoying their daily life at the Manor. The recent training involved lots of tasks to encourage staff to feel comfortable in expressing their ideas and creative sides. The staff seemed to enjoy themselves with the many varied activities over the 2 days of training. The benefits to the residents over the coming months will be seen via an increase in creative activities with all staff members.

Some of you may be aware through recent press there is a raised awareness in dementia in the community and in care homes. I have taken a lead on this and am undertaking a course in dementia for managers via Chichester University that will be accredited towards a degree and Alayna has already commenced a distance learning course and will be a ‘champion’ for dementia care at Valerie Manor.

Here I am again.

The snow has gone and we’ve enjoyed a few sunny days with the evenings getting lighter.  I actually love the dark nights... all cosy in front of the fire!

February saw us celebrating Valentines Day by cutting out and decorating heart shapes.  Those ladies and gents who opted for the Chinese supper when we celebrated the Chinese New Year really enjoyed it.  The dining room looked great with the decorations.  Another theme was The Oscars where sparkly top hats adorned the tables as well as various ‘props’ around the room.

We enjoyed the Alphabet Game and had a Pub Quiz which always goes down very well with a tipple!  10 Pin Bowling, Score a Goal and throwing our Giant Dice to see who can score the highest number were some of our Physical Activities. After a warm-up to some lovely Aromatherapy Music we had a good giggle exercising with pom-poms.... watch out you Cheer Leaders!

We didn’t forget the birds this month, most residents enjoyed the challenge of making bird feeders with pine cones stuffed with peanut butter and wild bird seed and threading popcorn and dried dates onto yarn.  Look out for the photos of the shrubs being decorated for the birds to take their fill.

We kicked off March with St.David’s Day.  A themed Lunch and Supper with a Welsh Quiz.  But more of that in our next monthly summary!...

Bye for now
