Meet Maria...
by
Zoe
on Fri 29 May 2009 17:05 BST
I would like to introduce another new member to the care team here at the Manor.
Maria is also a local lady and has already enjoyed one of our themed days with
the residents (John Wayne’s Birthday) - joining in by donning a cowboy hat! - and is looking forward to getting more
involved with the activities and outings. Welcome Maria.
You may have noticed a few new faces recently here at
Valerie Manor. Following Alayna's departure in April which created an opening for a new team member, I have also increased staffing levels due to the annual leave entitlement increasing in April
2009 to 5.6 weeks per person, creating more work hours to fill. You will see one more new
member of staff in June, our team will then be complete again and I am confident
and excited following the interviews that we will continue to have a fantastic
team who will thrive to meet the needs of the residents at Valerie Manor.

Menu and Activities Review – May 20th 2009
by
Zoe
on Thu 28 May 2009 15:03 BST
Thank you to everyone
that attended the recent activities and menu review. I’m pleased to say that overall
everyone was extremely happy with the current menus and activities that we have
at Valerie Manor.
Following discussion you
will very shortly be seeing more fish on the menu, liver and bacon, dumplings
and steak and kidney puddings! We are going to be having a fruit bowl in the
dining room for residents who would like more fresh fruit. We are also going to
start getting a variety of vegetables again to try but the general group
discussion featured carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and leeks that
you all enjoy!
Thank you to Steve for
taking on the task of the menus and ordering the food. Please continue to speak
to Steve or myself if you have any suggestions or recommendations!
We had a general
discussion regarding the activities and again everyone appeared to be very
happy with the activities at the Manor. We will be increasing the outings and
have had several suggestions for garden centres, drives in the countryside and
trips to the seafront to have ice-creams! We are looking forward to the
brighter weather to get out and about again!
Many thanks to everyone
for their continued support – We would love to continue to hear your ideas and
suggestions!
Thanks again – Zoe

Welcome Sheri...
by
Zoe
on Fri 22 May 2009 20:10 BST
I'd like to say a huge welcome to another new member of staff, Sheri, who has
recently joined the care team. Sheri is a local lady and is looking forward to getting to know
and caring for all the residents at Valerie Manor. She loves working with people and today enjoyed the
morning outside in the sunshine with the residents playing croquet!
All the staff
and residents welcome Sheri to Valerie Manor and hope she will be very happy here
with us.

Vegetable Garden
by
Zoe
on Mon 18 May 2009 14:41 BST
Recently, several
of our residents have been involved in the new vegetable garden in the
courtyards at Valerie Manor. We would like to say a big thank you to Norman’s
daughter and son-in-law for donating some tomato plants, to Lyn for donating some mint and to Jean for her runner beans. As you can see, two of our residents
have already been enjoying assisting Steve, our ‘project leader’ for the
vegetables. The potatoes have now been planted so fingers crossed for the next
stage!

Fire and Health & Safety Training
by
Zoe
on Fri 15 May 2009 17:34 BST
 As
most people who visit Valerie Manor are aware, health & safety is always
extremely high on my agenda so that staff, residents and visitors alike can
be confident that every effort is made to minimise any risk of accidents or
adverse incidents occurring at the Manor.
We
have recently had fire and health & safety training on site to ensure staff are aware of current legislations and their responsibilities whilst at
work. Nick Stubbs Training and Consultancy Limited (Nick, pictured above) provided the training
to ensure compliance with current mandatory training. Nick will also support me if I have
any health & safety questions that arise allowing me to draw on his wealth of
expertise, knowledge and contacts.

Let's Dance! The Musicals
by
Robin Bates
on Wed 13 May 2009 18:55 BST
For the past few weeks I've been busily preparing for my forthcoming Show... "Let's Dance! The Musicals". We always raise funds for Children’s
Charities and this year the proceeds are being presented to Ovingdean Hall School for
the Deaf. There are abut 230 pupils involved in the show from 3 years to adult. Zoe, Emma and Lucy are
bringing some of the ladies from Valerie Manor to see the Matinee Performance. Those unable to join us will be
able to see the DVD after the show. Some pupils have actually learnt Sign Language to accompany a song
they are singing and I hope to bring some along to Valerie Manor to entertain soon.
"Ovingdean
Hall School works with some of the UK's most severely and profoundly
deaf children. Pupils are encouraged to develop their listening and
speaking through the use of hearing technology (digital hearing aids or
cochlear implants) and speech and language therapy. Our team of
teachers and speech and language therapists strive to equip our pupils
with the skills and qualifications to succeed in the hearing world."

April Activities Summary
by
Robin Bates
on Fri 08 May 2009 20:10 BST

Hello again, here is an update on the April
Activities.
Again a very busy month with Easter Celebrations as well.
The ladies and gentlemen thoroughly enjoyed decorating Easter bonnets. One lovely
lady wearing hers out to lunch with her family! The Chocolate Easter Bunnies
presented by Zoe brought many happy smiling faces.
On the Queen’s Birthday everyone enjoyed traditional British
Fayre including a Cream Tea in the garden thanks to the sunshine!
Our ‘ Mind Benders’ in April included Matched Sets, Closure
Phrases and Animal Words to name but a few. Physical Activities included Musical
Hats (great fun!)
The Giant Dice Game and Target Toss. We had a Max Bygraves
Sing-a-long and a visit from our regular entertainer Brian.
May sees three more Theme Days. These days always go down well
as our ladies and gentlemen love to see the dining room decorated and most try the
different food we have to offer. We have a Mexican ‘Cinco de Mayo’, Spanish
Armada Day, we are also celebrating John Wayne’s Birthday! the menu for the
latter chosen by the residents.
Another favourite entertaining pair... Rita and Peter... are
due to pay us a visit.
I’m afraid I have not been around for the past few weeks as I am busy putting
final preparations to my forthcoming Show... "Let’s Dance! presents...The
Musicals" (more in my separate blog entry). Although I have not been around John has been coming over on
a regular basis to plough through a list of jobs given to him by Zoe!; He may
be retired but his daughter is making sure he does not get bored!
See you next month.

Welcome Jean!
by
Zoe
on Fri 01 May 2009 20:55 BST
I would like to wish new care assistant Jean a warm welcome from myself and all the residents and staff at Valerie Manor.
Jean comes with a vast amount of experience from the community and care homes. She also has a diploma in Extend Movement to Music classes which I’m sure our residents will all be enjoying very soon in the lounge and out in the gardens!
