I would
like to welcome Vi and Syd to Valerie Manor. Vi spotted our article in the Steyning Herald after the residents completed the first
Valerie Manor blanket which we donated to the Worthing Churches Homeless
Society. Vi immediately went to work and began knitting squares to assist the
residents with creating another blanket - we hope to have another two blankets
completed this year to donate again. Vi and Syd are now coming to Valerie Manor
every other week to have coffee with us and work on the blanket
together. I would like to thank them both for giving up their time to spend
with us.

Congratulations to Carole as she is the first member of staff to
complete her NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care which she started earlier in the year. Carole has worked
extremely hard over the past few months and it is a great achievement for her.
Carole has already asked if she can enrol to undertake her NVQ level 3 which
I would be pleased to support at Valerie Manor – Well done Carole, we
are all very proud of you!

Valerie
Manor has made a Skills Pledge which is a partnership between the Government
and Valerie Manor to ensure all staff are skilled, competent and able to make a
full contribution to the continued high standards of care and services that we
provide here. This will enable staff to continue to work towards relevant and
valuable qualifications over the coming months and years. Our Skills Pledge
Certificate will soon be displayed at Valerie Manor for everyone to see.

Well, I think
we have done extremely well for the first year for vegetables. As you can see
from the photos Steve has harvested our first crop of potatoes! They tasted
lovely with the mint that we have been growing, thank you Lyn for the
mint from your garden. The tomatoes and runner beans appear to be coming on
well and they have flowers and some baby green tomatoes appearing! We will keep
you updated with the progress and hope to expand on what we are doing with the help
of the resident's experience.

We were
recently successful in gaining planning permission for an extension to Valerie
Manor which is great news for the staff,
residents and families. This provides the opportunity to extend to enable us to
have nursing beds at the Manor and create an improved environment externally for the residents and their visitors.
We will still remain a small home with 23 beds in total and will have a conservatory for the residents to enjoy should they not be able to go outside. The residential home as it is will remain mostly unchanged with the beautiful study and lounge area that the residents and visitors love. The building will be in keeping with the original 17th century building and existing extension and will remain on the ground floor with a drop in level to ensure the courtyard and gardens will still benefit from the stunning views over the South Downs. I do hope that the residents will continue with their art work so that we can fill the new corridors with bright and cheerful paintings that have been designed and created by the residents themselves as the canvas that Marmalade is working on looks fantastic already! If anyone does have any questions about the extension then please do not hesitate to contact me to have a chat or see how you can become involved! I will update you when I have more information on timescales. Please find a link below to Horsham Council’s website where you can access all the detailed plans and architect summaries below: http://publicaccess.horsham.gov.uk/publicaccess/tdc/DcApplication/application_detailview.aspx?caseno=KEFTS4IJ01S00 Friday, July 10

![]() ![]() Well, what glorious weather we had for the Maypole dancing on Sunday! Thank you to Mum (Robin) and all the dancers and their families of ‘Let’s Dance’ Hassocks for the Country Dancing and Maypole display that the residents and their families thoroughly enjoyed. The event was finished by enjoying choc ices, ice lollies and cream teas in the grounds. Thank you also to the staff at Valerie Manor for all their hard work during the day. The residents also assisted Robin at the end of the day by rolling the Maypole ropes which my Nan used to do for us. We look forward to watching the DVD that Dad (John) took of the day soon! ![]() Thursday, July 9

Well it certainly was a hot June wasn’t it! Our lovely ladies and gentleman were donning sun hats and were being
splashed all over with sun cream and being encouraged to drink like fishes by
our lovely carers! Many opted to stay in our cool lounge although still enjoying their choc ices and
lollies!
We started Wimbledon fortnight with balloon tennis... we had a couple of Williams sisters there and one of our male residents proved to be a match for Andy Murray!! The dining room was decorated with tennis ball and strawberry garlands for the duration of the event. We enjoyed an Italian day with themed food and quiz. Two birthdays were celebrated in June. Helen, our lady from Scotland, thoroughly enjoyed her DVD surprise treat of ‘Scotland from the Air’. June, a passionate dog lover and artist was delighted with her artist set and book on breeds of dogs. We exercised to music, played Target Bean Bag, Musical Hats and Giant Snakes and Ladders... this covered some physical exercise. We thoroughly made a mess in the dining room making fresh flower arrangements... sorry Steve... but we did clear up before lunch was served! To cover some Mind Bending activities we enjoyed Four Word Phrases, Animal Groups, Analogies and guess what...... we’ve written another Valerie Manor Poem!!!... soon to be on display. Happy Summer, bye for now Robin Bates x Thursday, July 2

I
would like to welcome Cassie to the team as a volunteer. Cassie has come to us
from Outset Youth Action where she is taking a course in Health and Social Care at college. One of the reasons she is
volunteering is to give herself a better understanding of care settings. Cassie has been with us for a few months now and is always happy to get involved with whatever activities are planned and to help the residents enjoy their day - she's pictured here joining in with preparing photos for the Valerie Manor photo album. We're very lucky to have regular volunteers here at the Manor and would like to thank Cassie for giving up much of her time to be with us. |
