Our dear accordion player Brian and his wife Marian
visit every month but this month was extra special... All the residents
love to sing along to all of his old songs, but we also had dancing to his music
this month with the staff and residents around the lounge! Thank you Brian and
Marian for lighting up the resident’s day.

The residents love it when Activities Coordinator Robin comes to visit and
this week was no different. Not only did they enjoy having a chat over coffee
before their warm up exercise session, they then enjoyed line dancing from their
chairs – not forgetting the cowboy hats that adds to the smiles around the
room!

![]() We have a new cook at Valerie Manor and the residents are being spoilt! Maria cooks for us three days a week and the residents are now having homemade biscuits for coffee, and cakes for afternoon tea! As you know we have several themed days and this week we decorated the dining room and enjoyed Mexican Independence Day (although the residents preferred a roast dinner instead of Chilli!). Maria made a lovely cake for them all and their visitors to enjoy continuing with the theme! I’m sure we will all be putting weight on now – the smell of cakes baking sets everyone’s appetites off! ![]() We were so pleased to have had a few days of sunshine in September. Our much loved volunteer Marmalade came to spend the morning with us recently and enjoyed ice lollies and choc ices in the gardens with the residents after playing hoopla and tin can alley! Let's hope we've a few more days of summer left! ![]() Friday, September 11

![]() ![]() Not only do we have a team of artists but a team of cheerleaders! It was lovely to see mum (Robin) and the residents on Monday enjoying an exercise class with a difference......with pom poms! The resident’s faces always light up when Robin comes every Monday morning with another activity. I’m so pleased that the residents can do something that is beneficial for them like exercising from their chair and also have fun doing so as you can see from the photo’s on Monday (as you can see, the staff also like to join in). My sister leads ‘Gully’s Girls’ the cheerleaders for Brighton and Hove Albion - so the girls in her team had better watch out for the residents at Valerie Manor! Thursday, September 10

Apologies for the absence of a blog entry last week while I was away taking a short break. I'd like to thank Emma, Mum
and Dad (Robin and John) and all the staff for managing Valerie Manor so well
while I was away. I would also like to thank the district nurses, Michele our
local trainer, and Michael our pharmacist for supporting the team during my
first break away since I have been at the Manor.
I will be back soon to update you on more Valerie Manor news but in the meantime Robin has summarised August at the Manor for us all in the blog entry below...

August has been and gone... can you believe it!
The month started with
Cowes Week... a decorated dining room... everyone loved the seagull hanging from
the chandelier (a blown up one of course!). The old ‘grey matter’ got to work on
answering our Nautical Quiz... Anchors Away My Boys.
A very physical morning was held enjoying our Valerie Manor
Olympics. Each resident scored points
entering different events including Discus Throwing (paper plates) Javelin
(chopsticks) Shot Put (weighted balloons) to name but a few
‘events’.
Another favourite was ‘Do you know your flags?’ the residents seemed to enjoy a bit of competition and
were proud of the flags they held!
We took a virtual ride on the Orient Express and enjoyed the
Edinburgh Tattoo. Soft Badminton and Hoopla proved very popular as did our
Sensory Identification of Touch and Smell.
More brain teasers involved Matched Sets, Do You Know Your
Musicals and World Vacation Spots.
Zoe was going to join me in a Tap Dancing Demonstration but
was suffering from a poorly neck... don’t worry folks she’ll be back!
As mentioned earlier a Theatre duo entertained much to the
delight of everyone... we’ve booked them to come back in December with their
Christmas Themed Show.
Lots to come in September! Robin Bates x |
