View Article  Congratulations Emma!
I would like to congratulate Emma who has successfully completed her NVQ II in Health and Social Care. Emma is often on call for me when I am not on site and this theoretical knowledge will underpin her practical expertise and knowledge of how to deal with situations. I have every confidence in Emma when I leave the Manor in her capable hands to be on call.

It was identified during the initial assessments by Sussex Training that Emma had dyslexia and would require additional support. Although Emma has found it quite challenging, Sussex Training, along with Emma’s colleagues have been extremely supportive and she has now gained the qualification through determination and dedication. I'm extremely pleased for Emma and will be supporting her to undertake her NVQ III which she has already asked to enrol on.

View Article  Jalopy Outings!

The recent increase in staff hours has allowed me to arrange for two members of staff to take the residents out on a regular basis. Sheri is now insured to drive the Jalopy (minibus) with residents in it and Emma is going to be the escort for everyone each week. I’m sure other staff will be joining them throughout the year as well. The first outing was to the seafront in Worthing and the staff and residents enjoyed a drink while admiring the beautiful view – they were very lucky with the weather! Four residents enjoyed the outing this week and everyone is looking forward to more weekly dedicated schedules!

View Article  Welcome to Holly!
I would like to welcome Holly to Valerie Manor. Holly has come to us after working in the community for some time and has completed her Health and Social Care A Level. I have employed Holly to assist us with annual leave cover throughout the year and following the increase in caring and domestic hours at Valerie Manor. Holly is already settling in well and getting to know the residents. Welcome to the team Holly, we hope you will be very happy with us!

View Article  Extension Plans Update

Exciting times are coming! I thought I would provide you with a little update on the extension plans for Valerie Manor. Everything is still running according to plan and the tenders are due back next week – I will update you when we have decided on a contractor. The timescale at present is still for the work to commence on the 19th April 2010 with an enabling period of two weeks prior to this to make suitable arrangements for everyone for when the building work commences. I now have curtain designs, carpet samples and vinyl flooring to enable me to sit with the residents and staff and choose what we will be having in the extension. The residents are already choosing names for their bedrooms (they would like to call all rooms by bird’s names which is lovely). Robin is going to co-ordinate this with them........let’s hope the residents don’t all want the same bird!

We had a staff meeting last week and went through the plans again so staff are fully involved and excited about the scheme and will, as always be here along with me to support the residents through the stages of the extension so that there is minimal disruption to everyone. I’m so pleased that we have managed to come up with a solution where we can keep all of the residents at Valerie Manor so that they have familiar surrounds and staff that they know while the work is taking place. I think it will be nice for them to watch the extension develop and be part of the project.

View Article  February Activities Summary
Hello again,

Where did February go? One minute we were making hearts for St. Valentine’s Day... take a deep breath... and it’s St. David’s Day! The short month saw us exercising with Pom Poms, Line Dancing from our chairs, Flower Arranging, singing along with The Batchelors and playing Giant Snakes  and Ladders.  Our ‘Mind Benders’ this month included Matched Sets, Occupations and a Pub Quiz with a ‘tipple’.

We celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Tiger by finding out which animal represented the year that the ladies and gentlemen were born.... a Chinese style meal was offered to those who wanted it.... the Sweet and Sour Pork went down very well!

Valerie Manor looked beautiful this week.  The sun was shining!  look out for the abundance of snowdrops that are appearing in the garden.

It’s great that Zoe has organised two of the Staff to come in on a regular basis to take our ladies and gentlemen out in the ‘Jalopy’ it takes time getting organised and ‘loaded’.  You may not know but the vehicle (pictured right) belonged to my mother who had a stroke and was wheelchair bound for several years.  John and I used to take her out every Sunday... her favourite place was Seaford where we sat and watched the sea eating  ice-cream.  When my dear mother passed we were going to sell the ‘Jalopy’ (her name for her vehicle) it just so happened that at the time Zoe was putting forward a business plan to buy a Care Home so we decided to hold onto it in case her dream became reality.... and here we are today!  Her Nannas and Granddads would have been very proud.  It is such a shame they could not benefit from Valerie Manor.... I’ve booked my place!
