View Article  VIP at Shoreham Air Show
We were delighted that one of our resident’s daughters managed to get VIP tickets for her father for the RAF tent at the Shoreham Air Show last weekend. Fred has been telling staff and residents about his time as a pilot in the Royal Air force and I think it is wonderful that he was treated as a VIP for the day and enjoyed the experience.

Fred and daughter Joan also featured in this week's Steyning Herald! Click here to view the article.

View Article  Congratulations Sheri!
Huge congratulations to Sheri Pettigrew, our latest member of staff to complete her NVQ II in Health and Social Care. Sheri finished in record time I think and has worked hard to complete her course which is another great achievement. Sheri had not undertaken any care work when she came to Valerie Manor and she just has a natural caring nature and now has underpinning knowledge to support her in her role. Well done Sheri from everyone at Valerie Manor!

View Article  Postcards
Mum (Robin) had a good idea which we have now put in place... when my Nan was in a nursing home she used to love to receive postcards from the family whenever we were away and yes, we also used to send them from day trips even to Brighton as it used to brighten up her day receiving them. She had a pin board in her bedroom so she could look at them and keep them all which we have now implemented in the corridor at Valerie Manor. Staff have begun to send postcards whenever they are away and the residents enjoy hearing about their holidays as we read them out in the communal areas – a member of staff has recently brought in pictures to show them when she returned which they really enjoyed. As we are a small home and the residents are very familiar with staff they are missed when they go away.

While I was away the residents enjoyed the courgettes that we have grown and when I returned there were some ripe tomatoes that we all enjoyed this week. We are just waiting for the rest of the tomatoes to ripen as there are quite a few from the 3 plants that we have grown. Thank you again to our kind relatives who donated the plants and assisted us with the management of them while they were growing!

View Article  Extension News #9

Well, I have been away for a week and what a change! The roof has nearly been completed for phase 1 and the building is looking lovely, you would hardly know that it is an extension as it is so in keeping with the rest of the building. Of course, I was desperate to go inside and have a site visit when I returned and again I am pleased with the progress, wires everywhere, plaster on the walls and the rooms actually look like rooms now!! I am also extremely impressed with the speed in which phase two is progressing, we have a floor and the walls will soon be up. I must say, it will be lovely when we are at a stage where all the work is internal!

The extension is coming along nicely now and I have enjoyed spending some more time on site walking around the rooms which makes it feel very real! As you can see from the pictures the roof is now forming on phase one and the foundations for phase two are coming along nicely – I know that we all need some rain but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn’t rain until the bricks have been laid and the roof is complete! I have actually ordered the furniture now for the new bedrooms and will be placing the order soon for the kitchen equipment! Phase one is due to be completed at the beginning of September – we cant wait!

View Article  Community Stars Awards

You may be aware that each year the Herald/Gazette Newspaper hosts the Community Stars Awards where outstanding individuals and unsung heroes have the chance to shine.

Best volunteer
'You cannot help but admire volunteers who dedicate their time and efforts to helping others but never ask for a penny. But how often do you hear about their hard work? We want to change that – and you can help'.

Everyone at Valerie Manor decided that nominating our special volunteers Marmalade and Derrie & Lola would be a great way of showing our appreciation for the time they give up for those here at Valerie Manor. They really do all brighten up the lives of the residents and we can’t thank them enough for their kindness.
Good luck, and thank you so much!

All nominees are invited to attend an awards ceremony in November, hosted by Meridian Tonight presenter Fred Dinenage.

View Article  Steve – NVQ in Food Processing and Cooking

Steve has come to love cooking at Valerie Manor and asked some months ago if he could become a full time cook here. He has been assisting me for some time now in developing the menus and ordering the food each week and so this seemed a natural progression especially with the increase in cooking hours that we are planning with the extension. In preparation for this, although Steve has his 3 year certificate in Food Hygiene he was keen to get some qualifications under his belt to support this new role. Steve enrolled with City College Brighton and Hove and has already commenced his Food Processing and Cooking NVQ. I am extremely proud of him and think it shows great enthusiasm and commitment to the new role – you can see Steve here with his cheese scones, I must say, I was very impressed they tasted delicious. We wish Steve all the best for the course and look forward to sampling more of his food!

View Article  July Activities Summary
Hello again,

July was a slightly quieter month after the buzzing June.

We enjoyed three Themed Days this month.  We couldn’t let American Independence Day go by without roast turkey, the Statue of Liberty, Stars and Stripes and an American Quiz.  Bastille Day was also celebrated again with a Themed Quiz and ‘French Food’... no snails or frogs legs at the Manor !  On the last Monday of the month we went on a ‘Cruise’... exercising to Hawaiian and Caribbean music wearing our Leis. We rounded the morning off with a Grapefruit and Pineapple Punch with fruit salad and some tasty nibbles from far away lands.

A sing-a-long to The Andrews Sisters was enjoyed along with Hoopla, Tin Can Alley, Target Toss and Throwing Rings.  We do like to try and keep everyone moving albeit mostly from the chair.  Prepositions, Triads and The Apple Quiz got the old grey matter going.

Our Reminiscence Session brought about many memories... ’we slept 7 in a room... 6 brothers and 1 sister’.  Mothers and Fathers names were remembered by most... William and Susan, Herbert and Annie, Mable and Ernest, Harold and Kathleen, Cecil and Theodora Francis, Alice and Edward, William and Mary.  You may recognise some of these names as your Grandparents or Great Grandparents!  I think it is quite amazing how we can remember. It takes some of our ladies and gentlemen some time before they remember their early years and when they do they are delighted. ‘What was your favourite meal your mother used to cook when you were a child ?’... Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, Rice Pudding, Boiled Cod with Potatoes and fresh Peas having helped shuck them... Baked Apple, Tapioca Pudding... is your mouth watering ?  Lamb Stew and Dumplings... John's mum was good at that. Both Zoe and John enjoy Lamb Stew, myself, Sally-Ann and Damon cannot stand it ! I still make it for John and Zoe but have not mastered dumplings yet.

We start August with Cowes Week.  A decorated lounge and Nautical Quiz.  August is a busy month for birthdays... we have three to look forward to.

Can I just end by again thanking Zoe and her staff for looking after everyone during the upheaval. I must mention Zoe’s partner Robin (!) who is her rock and is so very supportive and calming. We have had many setbacks but instead of getting down everyone picks themselves up, dusts themselves off and start all over again.  I didn’t realise until the other day that they do not even have a dishwasher in the temporary kitchen !  When we have the new kitchen the staff will think they are in paradise.  Our ladies and gentlemen will benefit from a beautiful new dining room not to mention the lovely conservatory in addition to the lounge and study area  where they can relax.

Enjoy the sunny weather.

Robin
