Derrie and Lola in the Press!
by
Zoe
on Thu 30 Sep 2010 13:16 BST
As you may be aware we nominated our
lovely volunteers Derrie & Lola and Marmalade for a Community Star Award to
say a thank you for the time they come and spend with the residents at Valerie
Manor.
How lovely it was for the residents
to see an article in the Steyning Herald last week which not only said a huge
thank you to Derrie & Lola but should also raise the awareness of PAT dogs in
the local community and how it can benefit the elderly in so many different ways.
We will keep our fingers crossed for Derrie, Lola and Marmalade for the awards
night coming up soon.

Last of the Summer Sunshine?
by
Zoe
on Thu 23 Sep 2010 12:56 BST

I was delighted yesterday when Joyce
had everyone outside for coffee arranging the bird table, refreshing nuts and
cleaning the trays for fresh water now it has been re-positioned following the
completion of phase 1. The residents were outside enjoying the last burst of
summer sunshine and my word, it really was a stunning day; let’s hope for a few
more of these before the cold weather sets in.

Extension News #11 - Phase 1 Completion!
by
Zoe
on Wed 22 Sep 2010 12:37 BST
I must apologise for the lack of
extension updates recently but it has been all go for everyone over the past
few weeks. I am pleased to say that phase 1 is complete bar a few snagging issues and we now have our dining room, kitchen and 2
new bedrooms back in action! My, what a whirlwind it has been since April this year.
Yesterday we had a little celebration as the temporary kitchen was detached
from our building; it really was a landmark in the project to no longer require this and also to stop using the lounge as a lounge/diner.
I’m not sure that the pictures do the
new extension justice but I must say, it looks stunning and the residents seem to like
their new environment. Admittedly, as change effects us all it will take a
little time to get used to the new dining room and different routines but as
always the staff are on hand with a friendly face and words of re-assurance to
assist everyone through the process.
No time to stand still... I have a
meeting today to plan details of phase two! As you can see, it is coming along
nicely and the roof trusses are even going on next week! It will all be worth
it in the end and thank you so much to everyone for their flowers for the new
area, comments and enthusiasm for the whole project. I have to say a special
thank you to all the staff, mum and dad (Robin and John) and my partner Robin
as this past week especially has been extremely difficult for me as I have been
on crutches and there have been several hiccups with final handovers that have
needed addressing. It does look fantastic though!

Extension News #10
by
Zoe
on Mon 06 Sep 2010 13:22 BST

Well, the countdown is on... a week today and
we should see phase 1 completed. I am so excited as it is all coming together
and we will soon have a new kitchen and dining room along with two new
bedrooms. I have spent the weekend going through checklists to ensure that I
have remembered everything from curtains to bins for the new rooms. Over the
weekend there has also been significant progress made on phase 2 (above) - I was
surprised to see several bricklayers here all weekend and they really have made some great progress. Hopefully my next update will be some good news and photos of
phase 1 completed! Fingers crossed!
And don't forget you can view detailed progress of the extension works since day 1 in our online Picasa web album

August Activities Summary
by
Robin Bates
on Thu 02 Sep 2010 17:24 BST
My how the Summer has flown by !
Here we are in September... the children are going back to
school, I am back teaching getting ready for our ‘big’ show next year, little
Reuben is getting bigger every time we see him and last but certainly not least
the Valerie Manor extension is REALLY taking shape... how exciting
!
We enjoyed three birthdays in August yummy cakes all
round.
We started the month with a Nautical Quiz to celebrate Cowes
Week, Closure Phrases, Chicken or Egg Quiz and Matched Sets and Affinities were
among our ‘Mind Benders’.
Soft Badminton, Giant Snakes and Ladders, Hoopla and Darts
were a few physical games. Most joined in with our Valerie Manor Olympics. You
would be surprised at how competitive our Ladies and Gentlemen can be. We
scored each individual on various activities from the chair... shot put, javelin
throwing, spinning the bottle, wrapping string, discus to name but a few. We
had three people joint first. We all clapped the winners but not a gold medal
in sight ! (I’ll remember to get some next time).
When I am visiting on Monday mornings we always now exercise
followed by some reminiscences and a sing-a long. Most Ladies and Gentlemen
join in which is very satisfying. It is always up to the individual, with any
of our Activities, to choose to take part or not. A request to exercise to
Bach proved very successful.
Venice, Portugal, Alaska, Paris, Egypt and South Africa were
amongst the places in the world that have been visited and enjoyed. One
resident danced at The Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Oh I’m jealous ! One family
member used to keep goats as pets, another chickens.
Peter Sellers was born in September in 1925. We are
celebrating by watching one of his Pink Panther films. It is Grandparents Day
on 25th September so we have a great Reminiscence subject for the
Monday.
Bye for now
Robin
